Tokyo Secret Cheese Tarts at Resorts World Genting – Coffee, Strawberry & Purple Potato Flavours

Tokyo Secret has upped the ante. Introducing a multitude of flavours, the colourful cheese tarts peered through the glass casing beckoning me to pack them home.

I have been patronising its sister outlet at JB City Square which bears four flavours – original, hazelnut, matcha and purple potato – based from what I had last seen one/two months ago.

Since its not-so-recent opening at Resorts World Genting in 2016, Tokyo Secret has been drawing crowds to their Hanjuku cheese tarts. I felt an adrenaline rush as I spotted new contenders amongst the typical ones I usually had, during my recent trip to Genting weeks ago.

The Coffee x Hanjuku Cheese Tart RM10.90 would float your boat if you are a lover of strong coffee. It was a gustatory pleasure to sink my teeth into the pillowy soft cheese richly infused with coffee while the centre darker portion was a delightful chunk of gooey sweetness. I fear for my waistline and this sinful indulgence was more than what I could ask for.

I would come back for this. But before I dump all my votes in here and land a walkover, I have to let you know that the rest of the cheese tarts have their own suit of loyal followers too.

The Matcha x Hanjuku Cheese Tart RM10.90 is still my go-to matcha fix. Took a bite and it was instant nostalgia, since it was the first tart I bought from Tokyo Secret back then, and I had loved, raved and implored many others to try.

Probably one of the more complex matcha tart, the matcha cheese gave way to a layer of chunky red beans held together by mochi with a chewy consistency. It was a fine line to thread on but the flavour hit all the right spot. The play of bitter-sweetness on the tastebud followed by the surprise fillings made this highly irresistible.

Purple Potato x Hanjuku Cheese Tart RM10.90 was nothing like its predecessor. Simple and elegant in style, it assumed a savoury profile made into a dessert. The fillings was dense with earthy notes and could get rather one-dimensional after a few bites. Supporters of this root vegetable would probably give it a go.

The buy-5-get-1-free promotion prominently displayed across the countertop had me getting the Strawberry x Hanjuku Cheese Tart RM10.90 to fit the number. This came highly recommended by my fellow Tokyo Secret admirer, so I thought ‘why not’. But the outcome is that strawberry-infused anything is perhaps not my thing. I would prefer to eat the whole fruit on its own. Sorry, ichigo fans.

Of course, if you like, you can go for the original flavour, Hanjuku Cheese Tart RM9.90 which will taste like cheese ice cream when placed in the fridge. Otherwise, heat it up and enjoy it as a molten cheesy snack.

I have to admit I do love Tokyo Secret’s cheese tarts. Some flavours taste amazing and I would no doubt cross the border just for these. I know of two groups of friends on extreme ends of the continuum, the ones I stood by and the ones i would fight for my cheese tarts’ rights. Regardlessly, it all boils down to enjoying your favourite food wherever and whenever you could.
