Toby’s The Dessert Asylum: For Food Coma And Dessert Overkill

Toby’s The Dessert Asylum is a casual and family-friendly restaurant located in the West. It features an al fresco dining area surrounded by greeneries that for a moment, I half expect myself to have walked into a magical treehouse.

The interior is cosy enough, boasting woody-looking furnitures, white-tiled walls with one side made of grass patches. Upon entry, I was greeted by a giant monkey plushie sitting beside two shelves of cakes and pastries behind transparent display. And that’s not just it, there is a separate menu full of desserts available for your selection!

Toby’s also has a lunch time promotion starting at $8.90, great for office workers nearby to have their meals. The teatime specials would appeal to those seeking some light cakes or desserts in the middle of the day, with cake set going at $6.90 onwards.

Besides desserts, there is also a full page menu of over 50 savoury items ranging from sides to main courses like burgers, pizzas, pasta and Toby’s house specials. It is a tough choice deciding which is best, so why not go for their specialities!

The Battered Button Mushrooms ($6.5) with tartar arrived in a generous portion, great for sharing! While the coating was fried to crispiness, the fillings were moist and juicy. Rather tasty and the tartar dip added a touch of creaminess to it.

The Taco Wings ($11.90) was served with pickles and sundried tomato sauce. I enjoyed the wings with the crunchy skin and somehow the taste reminded me of our fried shrimp paste chicken. Even without the sauce, the wings were good enough to shine. The pickles helped to cleanse the palate with its acidity and refreshing taste, after a few rounds of fried food.

Another recommended dish was the Toby’s Deluxe Burger $16.80 where a tall burger stuffed with bacon, beef patty, tomatoes, cheese and onions sat atop a plank. What really wowed us was the beef patty that was infused with tons of cheese. When sliced apart, the cheese oozed out, satisfying both our eyes and bellies. And of course, this is best savour when it is still hot!

My favourite had to be the Stew Pork Pizza ($15.90), loaded full of stewed pork and cheese on the thin crust. The stretch of the cheese was prominent with each tug of the pizza slice, leaving us excited for more. While some might find it overwhelming, I particularly preferred my pizza full of ingredients and for the pork to be charred round the edges. Slightly sweet and rather tasty.

No matter how full you are, do leave space for the desserts. I bet you one, two or three more visits and you still won’t be able to try everything off the menu.

The mud-pies were definitely must-tries. The Lord Vadar ($15.90) comprised of rum and raisin and double chocolate ice cream with a side of Grand Marnier to pour over. Alcoholic desserts? I am game for it. The combination of liqueur and ice cream blended well together. The flavours came out rich and bold, with a touch of booziness.

Everyday there will be several cakes on display. New on the shelf is the Godfather ($7.90), a twist from the typical Tiramisu we usually have. The cake was surprisingly moist with the fork cutting through easily. It could be a tad on the sweeter side while the coffee-soaked sponge cake lent a mild bitterness to the overall texture.

I couldn’t resist ordering the Arctic Bombshell ($12.90) which arrived at a jaw-dropping portion, the size of two fists. Encased within the meringue was a layer of chocolate ganache and vanilla ice cream on top of chocolate brownie. The meringue was nicely whipped to create a smooth consistency and none too sweet neither. The chocolates within were rich, hence best eaten with the ice cream altogether.

One of the drinks worth a mention was the Coffee Chendol ($7.90). As the name suggests, there was chendol ingredients and coffee mixed together. Interesting flavours and highly recommended for those who fancy a twist in our local beverage.
