As far as I could remember, Tanuki Raw has been around for many years. Its flagship outlet at Orchard Central has always been the buzz in town while accumulating a mass of loyal followers for its signature beef bowl.
Besides specializing in rice bowls (donburi), the menu has expanded over time to include various Japanese sides, sushi rolls, spam fries, burgers and more.
We arrived for lunch on a crowded weekday and were lucky to snag the outdoor seating.
For lunch, the Truffle Yakiniku donburi starts at $14.90 with truffles at an additional $7.10. We had the later which was served with a generous amount of truffle shavings crowned atop the pan-seared US black Angus short rib glazed in truffle soy sauce. The Japanese rice seasoned with furikake was simply delicious and flavoursome that you might just want to mix in the onsen egg for a velvety mouthfeel.
For something more luxurious, the Foie Gras Truffle Yakiniki donburi $19.90 with Fresh Truffle $27 and Foie Gras Scallop & Unagi donburi $26.90 would make you drool a puddle. Pamper yourself with these umami-fied delicacies alongside Tanuki Raw’s cocktails too.
For the love of seafood and sashimi, the Tanuki Kaisen Chirashi $22.90 presents a bountiful bowl of the uni, tuna, negitoro, salmon sashimi, aburi salmon belly, scallop, sea bream, sword fish, white tuna, yellow tail, ikura, tamago and ebiko over a bed of Japanese rice. These fresh succulent cuts satisfied me just nice.
The Truffle Sweet Potato Fries $10.90 was one of our favouites at our table and its addictiveness was further enhanced by the side of the truffle aioli. Each strand was fried till a light crisp with soft insides. This is a must-order!
