Si Chuan Dou Hua Nostalgic Dim Sum Buffet Lunch Promo at PARKROYAL on Kitchener Road

My love for dim sum runs deep and to line up all the dumplings and buns I have eaten in my life, they would stretch as long as the Great Wall of China.

There is an abundant of places in Singapore that serves dim sum, mostly for lunch, with a few establishments that has all-day dining or sell through midnight.

If you have not heard of the dim sum buffet at Si Chuan Dou Hua, you are really missing out. The wildly popular Si Chuan Dou Hua is an award-winning Chinese Restaurant in PARKROYAL on Kitchener Road, with a focus on Si Chuan and Cantonese cuisine. Dim Sum is one of the main highlights and this season, Si Chuan Dou Hua is launching a ‘Nostalgic Dim Sum Buffet Feast‘, featuring a list of 40 handcrafted dim sum delicacies, signatures, double-boiled soups and desserts, prepared by Executive Chef Leung Wing Chung (梁永祥) and Master Dim Sum Chef Wen Xin Wen (温新文).

Out of 40 tempting options, 6 are one-time serving while the rest are free-flow. Choosing what to order is hard but this is a good sign because it means that almost all the items in the menu simply looks good to be on the table.

Amidst anticipation, bamboo baskets of dim sum were stacked across the table. The open-mouthed Siew Mai with Diced Abalone were exquisite darlings with succulent meats. My favourite was the Steamed Vegetarian Dumpling with Black Truffle filled with the flavours of earth and shrooms.

The basket of Prawn Dumpling with Coriander wrapped within translucent chewy skin was ordered twice, which we ate to our satisfaction.

The Deep-fried Lotus with Minced Fish deserved a valedictorian. Each minced fish paste was padded into coin shape and sandwiched between two slices of lotus roots before being deep-fried. While it looked complicated, eating it wasn’t messy and the portion equated to two small bites. Resembling tiny wheels, I was glad that these took a spun out of the run-of-the-mill dim sum.

If civilisation were to fall apart, we would be sprawled across table fighting for this. The Deep-fried Signature Pork Belly Roll with Yam, bearing an interesting combination, was well-received by us (one piece for each human).

It felt like eating a deep-fried bun dotted with crispy soy bean while the inside was stuffed with heart-throbbing braised pork belly and soft yam bites.

The Minced Meat Dumpling in Green Tea Paste resembled baggy balloons with thick chewy skin. While the dumpling was fed plump and meaty, the taste of the green tea sauce was almost non-existent.

Trust me, I would jump straight for the Flatfish with Signature Soya Bean Crumb in Osmanthus Sauce. It’s lacklustre appearance was not to be undermined – don’t judge the fish by its scales. These chunky fish meats were fried and buried under a drift of golden brown soya bean crumbs.

It seemed dry but it wasn’t. The surface of the skin buckled and the fleshy white meats tore through easily. Stealing the limelight was the soya bean crumbs, a twist from the usual cereal flakes that many restaurants use. It was crunchy sweet with a nutty aftertaste, further adding dimensions to the otherwise flat-tasting fish.

Besides the bite-size dumplings, fried rolls and buns, Si Chuan Dou Hua varies with other alternatives such as the Steamed Chicken and Mushroom with Soya Bean, Bean Curd in Spicy Seafood Sauce served in a Basket and not forgetting the Double-boiled Chicken Soup with Abalone, Sea Whelk, Cordycep Flowers and Conpoy, a new addition to the family.

If you are guessing Dou Hua (Beancurd soup) to be synonymous with the restaurant name, you are right. Si Chuan Dou Hua is famous for that silky smooth Homemade Bean Curd with Wolfberry. For something chilled and equally satisfying, the Lemongrass Jelly with Fresh Fruits will make a good after-meal dessert.

Another recommendation is the Deep Fried Peanut Cake in Teochew Style. Enveloped in purplish mochi balls, the generous fillings were bursting to spill over.
