Puri-Puri – Homely cafe in Beach Road for Japanese Rice Bowls with Sashimi, Wagyu Beef, Duck & more!
Named after the Japanese phrase for “soft and juicy”, a term used to express freshness, Puri-Puri is a self-declared Hokkaido-inspired cafe located in a cosy corner of Beach Road. Specialising in Japanese rice bowls and other seafood-based treats, Puri-Puri may be easily mistaken for a furniture shop from the outside, given the eclectic mish-mash of tables, chairs, and even lights scattered around its two storey space.
For the working crowd, there are budget-friendly bowls, while pricier premium bowls have also been designed to indulge your taste buds.
The cafe uses a dumbwaiter system to ferry your meals to you. After placing your order, all you have to do is wait for the pager to ring and you can proceed to lift up the door of the dumbwaiter to receive your food.
There are four kinds of Kaisen Bowls to choose from and each of them is priced $10.90. It comes with a colourful array of fresh diced sashimi like salmon, maguro and mekajiki, served over a bed of sushi rice. Other toppings include the salad, Japanese Cucumber, marinated seaweed and crunchy tobiko.
For something a little more luxurious, the Premium Kaisen Bowl $25.90 comes with uni, amaebi, hotate, snow crab leg and ikura on top of the existing Kaisen bowls!
The truffle bowls fared better. The Spanish Iberico Pork Truffle Bowl $17.90 and Japanese Wagyu Truffle Bowl $27.90 had meats which were beautifully charred and cooked well, with a satisfying savoury note that left me wanting more. Each bowl is also completed with an onsen egg, scallions and shaved truffles.
The Spanish Iberico Pork Truffle Bowl is currently on the special menu, so get it while you can.
The premium 16 multigrain rice helped to elevate the dish too!
Also on the special menu are Fresh Hiroshima Oysters with Ikura and Wakame $6.50 per piece, with a strong, briny taste reserved for the most ardent of seafood lovers.
Other items include the Yakitori Chicken Skewers $7.50 and Salt Grilled Salmon Head $11.90.
