Lobster Porridge at Orchid Live Seafood Restaurant in Ulu Singapore

The lobster porridge at Orchid Live Seafood Restaurant is highly recommended by a friend who has been visiting the humble restaurant on several occasions.

A recent trip to Orchid Live Seafood made me realised what I have been missing out!

Orchid Live Seafood is situated at Bah Soon Pah Road, in an Ulu part of Yishun. There is an open-spaced carpark beside the restaurant for parking which can get quite crowded during peak period. The restaurant has an indoor air-conditioned and outdoor seating that caters to large families as well.

Famous for their live seafood, you can actually see tanks of lobsters, crabs, prawns, shellfishes and fishes lined up along the restaurant.

And their signature dish amongst all is the famed Lobster Porridge started since 1999!

The Lobster Porridge is priced at $11 per 100g and at a minimum of 600g for two pax.

We had the two pax portion. It came in a very large bowl with two whole lobsters swimming in a sea of golden-yellow broth. The lobster flesh was tender and succulent, not chewy at all.

As for the broth, it was rich and robust, packed with the flavours of the crustacean; neither oily nor overwhelming, it complemented the lobsters with an added fragrance and tastiness.

The porridge was hidden underneath, with the portion just nice for three person actually. Having soaked up the broth, each rice grain was soft and moist.

It is no wonder that the Lobster Porridge is their award-winning dish. Even I am salivating while typing this out!

Besides having lobsters in porridge, you can also have it Butter Coated, Garlic Steamed, Chilli or Sashimi style. Boston lobsters, on the other hand, goes at $70 per piece.

We also had an order of the Steamed Live Prawns at 100g for $6.

Other cooking variations include Cereal and Wasabi. We were recommended the Steamed version as this would allow us to better savour the taste of live prawns.

The prawns were served bright red, with crunchy and juicy flesh.

Another of Orchid Live Seafood’s signature dish is the Steven Chicken $12 for small.

I would really urge you to try this. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and had a tinge of sweetness due to the marination. Some might find the texture a bit dry but the taste was just nice for us. And I did enjoy gnawing away at the bones!

The Hotplate Tofu $12 was ok with well-cooked vegetables and tofu, though the sauce could be more flavourful.

Another of our favourite was the Sambal Kang Kong $8. The portion was perfect for sharing and generous for the price. This was actually spicy enough for some; also the way I love it.

The live seafood dishes at Orchid Live Seafood is definitely their winning factor and what attracts people coming despite its location.

It is also advisable to make a reservation for dinner time as it can get pretty crowded, especially if you want to sit indoors too.

In total, we spent less than $50 for a group of three, including drinks.
