Montana Brew Bar – Nasi Lemak Waffle & Durian Egg Waffle at PoMo

Waffles will never be a dying trend, being almost like a staple food where you can eat at any time of the day. Local tastebuds would enjoy their waffles spread with the typical kaya perfumed with coconut fragrance or the creamy peanut butter sauce. Speaking of something more classic, waffles make a good pairing with ice cream and soft serve, drizzled with a dazzling amount of sauces and toppings. The revolution of waffles is probably worth a thesis probe where human start to perceive waffles as more than just snacks and stomach-fillers.

The next time you are looking for a waffle situation, Montana Brew Bar is the pick of the town with its re-invented menu of sweet and savoury waffles. Be it stuffed waffles, loaded waffles or egg waffles, the menu takes a bold twist towards a fusion-istic combination.

Flicking the dust off traditional menus, Montana introduces innovative creations such as the Assam Crab Waffle, Nasi Lemak Waffle and Kimchi Seafood Waffle.

Satisfying the seafood craving in you is the Assam Crab Waffle $16.30 buried underneath a generous amount of shredded crab meats and pineapple salsa, sweet and refreshing against the savoury waffles.

Alternatively, try the Kimchi Seafood Waffle $15.80, a personal favourite of mine. Resembling Okonomiyaki, these waffles assumed a reddishness from the inclusion of Kimchi Powder, and were seasoned with Seaweed and strings of House-made Garlic Mayonnaise on top. Though the waffle texture tasted limper, they were overloaded with chunky Prawns and Squids that made it equally rewarding.

Another crowd-pleaser was the Nasi Lemak Waffle $15.50 where instead of rice, it was replaced with a full waffle. The Turmeric Confit Chicken was exceptionally fork-tender and juicy. Whoever came up with the idea of the Otah Mousse Sambal Chilli deserves an ovation for its thick and flavourful taste that matched with the various components. Lying within the pockets on the Coconut Rice waffles were bits of Ikan Bilis and Peanuts, convincing elements of a Nasi Lemak.

Dessert Waffles are more or less expected of Montana. You can’t really go wrong with the Matcha Waffle $14.30 where the griddle turned the surface of the waffle into a dusty brown while the edges hardened into crispy lines. Served with a Vanilla Ice Cream flanked by Azuki Beans, Green Tea Marshmallows and Chocolate Wafers, I was sold.

The Waffle Bar takes over the first floor of Montana for desserts and drinks-goers to lepak. Overhead lightbulbs shone brightly even though it was still broad daylight but served as a stunning bokeh background.

No matter how full you are, I would recommend you to come down and have a go at one or two of Montana’s signature ice cream egg waffles.

The Red Velvet Cheesecake $12.80 bore an instagram-worthy baby blue Sea Salt Hokkaido Milk Soft Serve, creamy and saltier on the palate. Dug deeper and you would find the shy piece of Japanese cheesecake and Berry Compote. Paired with the huge crunchy egg waffle, the marriage of sweet and sourness was a blissful one.

I had my sights set on the Durian Coconut $14.50. Made from the pulps of Mao Shan Wang, the soft serve toyed with the smell and lingering aftertaste of the durian. Rose-coloured Coconut Flakes trickled down the Coconut Egg Waffle leaving behind a trail of glitter that was visually appealing.

Other options include the Chocolate Caramel Brownie $11.80, Sesame Thai Milk Tea $12.80 and Matcha Red Bean $13.80.

Besides the sweets and the cold, if you are up for the challenge, the Samyang Fire Carbonara $16.80 climbs from a mild level 1 spiciness to a scorching hot level 5 where chilli padi becomes evident in the plate of orangey-red pasta. We gung-ho and went straight to level 5. It was tasty but a tongue-numbing experience with a little ear-popping sensation.

More weekend brunch items are available on the menu too.

Quit being boring and just head for the Crab Cake Benedict $17, Meringue Scrambled Egg Waffle $16, Truffle Eggs Rosti $16.50 and Brulee Cheesecake French Toast $14.50, to name a few. Or simply poke an egg and watch it cries a river.

Montana’s coconut cold brew is not to be belittled. The Regular $6.80 is a safe and possibly the perfect option for a clean and smooth taste of the coconut cold brew, coupled with hints of light sweetness.
