Les Bouchons (Ann Siang) Singapore Steak Frites Affordably Good

Les Bouchons Restaurant Parisian Bar is an underrated French restaurant at Club Street, serving one of the most affordable steak frites in town.

Truth be told, I chanced upon this place after tons of research on Google. My friend had come to me with a budget of below $50, asking me to recommend a classy place that serves good steak. And I have thought to myself, isn’t steak all about price – the better the quality, the higher the price. To throw in ambience, $50 seems too low a budget.

There are several guides like Best Steaks in Singapore or Singapore’s List of Affordable Steaks on the internet. Few restaurants fit the bill and those that do are more for causal dining.

Until I saw Les Bouchons and I knew I had hit a nail.

I would label it fine dining.

Les Bouchons is a really cozy restaurant with a parisian decor and white washed table cloth over tables that might be a bit close to one another. That aside, service was delivered by gentlemen, courteous and attentive.

It was a simple one-page menu with the usuals like starters, main course and desserts.

We had the Grilled Rib Eye Steak With “Vigneron” Butter $39.80. It came with a huge bowl of mixed salad with lots of onions and free-flow homemade French Fries.

For each order of the steak, it came with four kinds of mustard.

The Rib Eye was a glistening slab of meat with criss-cross grilled marks on the surface. I had mine Medium Rare which was served exactly the way it should be.

I was caught off guard as most restaurants I had been to would serve the steak more well-done than I requested it to be. I was used to getting Medium for an order of Medium Rare, but Les Bouchons proved otherwise. Here, Medium Rare is Medium Rare.

The meats were flavourful from the soft fats and melted garlic and herb infused butter. It was sinful yet satisfying with each mouthful.

As someone who doesn’t take much of carbs, I found myself munching on one after another strand of fries. Somehow it wasn’t your usual kind of boring fries, but there seemed to be some sort of seasoning within it. It was so good, probably the best fries I ever had.

Along with some house red, it was a good pairing with the heavy meal.

That rounded off my night – superb meal for its price and quality.

Now I know where to introduce my friends next time. Yes, it is possible to find a decent steak frites without spending over the top.
