Jumbo Seafood ION Orchard – Exclusive Chilli Crab Dim Sum, Seafood Pao Fan & Cod Fish Otah

JUMBO Seafood has finally landed in town at ION Orchard just last month. The interior allows for several private dinings, including the main area that overlooks the orchard road.

New and exclusive to the ION outlet includes the three types of chilli crab dim sum (available during high tea), Crispy Fried Cod Fish in Nonya Sauce, Cod Fish ‘Otah’ in Coconut, Homemade Beancurd and Mixed Seafood Braised with Abalone Sauce and, King Prawns and Fragrant Rice in Rich Seafood Broth.

From 21 January to 19 February, JUMBO Seafood will be offering the Prosperity Salmon Yu Sheng at $58(M) and $88(L) with a top up of $48 for sliced abalone.

Continue with a delightful feast of JUMBO Seafood’s signature Geoduck Clam blanched with Superior Stock ($18.80 per 100 gram). Served on ice, there are four different cuts of the clams, which vary in textures and taste. Those of a darker shade are generally softer and creamier as compared to the lighter-coloured ones which are QQ and firmer.

Besides sashimi-styled, the sliced clams can also be enjoyed with the superior stock. They would be blanched briefly in the stock before being ladened into a serving bowl.

The broth was light, without overwhelming the taste of the clam.

We all know that JUMBO Seafood is famous for the chilli crabs which make good sharing portions. But, how about having them bite-sized for an afternoon tea break?

You can now drop by JUMBO Seafood at ION Orchard for these dainty pastries and buns infused with delicious chilli crab fillings. The Pan Fried JUMBO Chilli Crab Buns $8.80 burst with steaming hot shredded chilli crab, spicy with kick while the JUMBO Chilli Crab Puffs $8.80 reminded me of the char siu puffs, flakey with gravy.

For those who seek a scaled-down version of the Award-winning Chilli Crab can opt for the Chilli Crab Meat Sauce with Sliced Fried Mantou $16.80 in a basket. Dunk the mantou into the chilli crab sauce and have it with the chunky heaps of shredded crab meat. It was pure bliss.

Crispy Fried Cod Fish in Nonya Sauce $22 was well-cooked with a thin crispy layer that reveals fleshy white meats underneath. Even the skin was nicely fried and curled in at the crunchy edges. The star of the dish, though, was the unassuming puddle of Nonya sauce that was tangy with spices. The portion of the sauce was just right to fill every bite of my fish with it.

*Picture shows a smaller version.

Cod Fish ‘Otah’ in Coconut $16.80 was given a make-over from the typical otah wrapped in banana leaf.

Stuffed in a coconut husk, the otah was generously studded with cod fish bits. It wasn’t very spicy and the texture of the otah was so soft and light, one could finish the entire husk.

Homemade Beancurd and Mixed Seafood Braised with Abalone Sauce comes in four kinds of sizes – $14(XS), $18(S), $27(M) and $36(L). Definitely a smart and thoughtful move catering to single diners or small eaters who wish to try varied items. There are actually scallops and prawns mixed in with the sauce.

Another item exclusive to ION outlet is this King Prawns and Fragrant Rice in Rich Seafood Broth $38. It lived up to its name for the thick, rich and nourishing orangey broth made from prawn shells and superior stock. Pearly Japanese rice laid underneath alongside five to six king prawns.

Upgrade to a Live Boston Lobster (instead of King Prawns) at $78 for a gustatory feast.

One of the JUMBO signatures include the Cheese Baked Mentaiko King Prawns $16.

Giant prawns were slit apart, flattened, slathered with a bountiful amount of creamy mentaiko and baked. Sweet and umami, the flesh remained crunchy at its best.

Chinese Chives stirred fried with Minced Garlic $11(XS), $14(S), $21(M) and $28(L) was pleasant and a good addition to the seafood-centric meal.

Desserts are as equally worthy as the mains.

The Chilled Mango Sago Pomelo $5 was stacked in a top glass, icy with sweet mango cubes punctuated with the acerbity of the pomelo.

Lovers of durian can try the Chilled Durian Pudding $6.80 and Fried Durian $6.80.

Double Boiled Peach Resin $4.80 would make a good collagen booster as well as warm up your belly after such a full-filling meal.
