House of MU’s New Christmas Menu Set with Truffle Pasta, Josper-grilled Meats & Dessert platter!

House of MU is tucked neatly across the road. It’s dressed like a high-end hipster restaurant giving off a relaxing vibe. We’re not too far off since they specialise in European food served on huge Burmese teak tables. Plus, you won’t miss the shop – it emanates a glowy pink from afar!

This fluorescent pink can be seen a mile off as you approach House of Mu!

A well-stocked bar is always necessary – No issues here!

For Christmas, the chefs at the House of Mu came up with an extensive Christmas set menu featuring all of our favourite Christmas delights: Yes! Bring on the meat, the cakes, and seafood!

Expect a three-course Christmas set meal priced at $88++ per pax (minimum two pax to dine) and only available between 1 Dec 2018 to 31 Jan 2019.

Pastry Chef Pang Ji Shuang will be pulling up his sleeves for a beautiful showcase of the iconic dessert platter and log cakes, while Chef Tyrrell Joon will be whipping up a festive menu consisting of the much-anticipated Josper-grilled meats and a series of pasta dishes too.

Diners can choose 1 starter from the set menu:

Cream of Pumpkin Soup w/Homemade Bread

Smoked Salmon & Avocado Salad & Tangy dressing

Caesar Salad w/Roquefort & Dried Cranberries

Chef Joon’s Linguine Vongole

Angel Hair Pasta with Pan Fried Scallop ($8 supplement)

Truffle Risotto with Crayfish ($8 supplement)

We began with the smoked salmon & avocado salad with tangy dressing, which contains smoked salmon, dried cranberries, fresh lettuce, capsicum, cucumbers, croutons, quail eggs, and blue cheese. It’s got a strong citrusy salad dressing – definitely a refreshing start to this night! If anything, this reminds me of a Greek salad.

This was followed by the truffle angel hair pasta ($8 supplement) with juicy pan-fried scallops.

When I scanned through the set menu, I was looking forward to this dish the most! Scallops are my all-time favourite, and I can’t believe how juicy and plump these were. Really generous portions.

The dish was moderately chilled, and the angel hair pasta was cooked like an aglio olio – simply divine, with garlic and all. Pan frying makes the texture of the scallops slightly crispy on the outside and absolutely tender on the inside. I won’t be forgetting this for a long time!

What’s Christmas without the X-MU-S platter of Josper-grilled meats? For our main dish, there’s a sumptuous selection of different sorts of meat and seafood: lamb rump, turkey breast, honey glazed ham, duck breast, German smoked sausage, pork tenderloin, USDA prime rib-eye, and tiger prawns.

All of the above will be served with sauces (mustard, black pepper and cranberry sauce), roasted potatoes and the usual trimmings!

The lovely Christmas carvery platter served with pearls of cranberries and an assortment of sauces!

Surprisingly, the turkey breast was not dry. I’m so used to eating dry turkey breast that I hadn’t expected much from this one, but surprisingly, the turkey breast slices were not dry at all. And it wasn’t because of the cranberry sauce – the meat was roasted without losing much of its moisture. For turkey breast, that’s pretty much an accomplishment.

This is the turkey breast with cranberry sauce, garnished with a slice of pineapple and a fig

The USDA prime rib-eye was also one of my favourites. It’s seasoned well, with an adequate amount of black pepper sauce drizzled over it! Wished there was more of this.

Your kids would love the smoked sausages, if you’re having a family meal here – they’re juicy, coupled with a nice smoky taste, and the honey glazed ham drizzled with mustard was an unexpectedly good combination!

The prawns contained the salty tang of the sea – fresh and juicy – almost all of us found them very addictive.

Finally, it’s time for dessert. The chef has whipped up a special dessert: the Chendol Log Cake, and we’ve got high hopes for this winsome-sounding local delight!

After slicing it up and taking a few bites, it wasn’t much to our expectation. The chendol were barely prominent while the cake tasted more of passionfruit and mango. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful cake with a quirky twist to the traditional Christmas log cake.

Next up was the dessert platter!

What a work of art, wouldn’t you say? It’s got a slice of chocolate log cake (the traditional one), a brandied fruitcake, handmade vanilla bean ice cream on a bed of shredded wafers, two small pots of creme brulee, two macarons (green tea and raspberry) and a sprinkling of fruits and lemon cream purees.

The macarons were stickier and denser than usual, sweeter too, but they matched the creme brulee’s muted flavours. We love how the creme brulees has a balanced sweetness too! Alternating between the sweeter and less sweet items was a bit tricky, but we figured it out.

The vanilla bean ice cream with wafers was an interesting one (again, not too sweet either) – who knew they’d get along this well? The chocolate log cake and brandied fruit cake stuffed with various dried fruits certainly lived up to their names!

If you’re looking for a great communal place for Christmas with friends or family, this place is for you. I’m certain the kids would still enjoy the German sausages, pasta, honey glazed ham, and the desserts!
