From Mama, With Love – Italian Family Favourites at District 10, UE Square

When repaying our mothers’ years of toil and kindness, many of us do the usual – a handwritten card, some flowers, and an extravagant dinner. Chef Luca Pezzera, owner and executive chef of District 10, went the extra mile by rolling out an entire menu in honour of his mother’s 70th birthday.

Aptly titled From Mama, With Love, District 10’s new family favourites feature carefully chosen home cooked jewels from Chef Pezzera’s childhood in Bergamo, northern Italy, where simplicity and freshness were prized over extravagance for the family table.

The new highlights range from pastas to pizza, prepared with the same local ingredients Chef Pezzera grew up on.

For starters, the Ravioli Alla Fornarina Con Tartufo Nero ($28), boasting handcrafted ravioli with ricotta, black angus beef and egg yolk, topped with prized shaved black truffle, is among the richest District 10 has to offer. Buttery rich with egg yolk, each individually wrapped ravioli bursts with richness and flavour on the first bite, It’s not hard to see why this was an instant hit with the table.

For vegetarians, the Il Piatto della Nonna Fatto ($28), features homemade Angel Hair pasta in light parmesan cheese sauce with black truffle. Deceptively simple and earthy, yet nonetheless rich.

Less is more, preaches Mama Pezzera, and that’s certainly true. While we underestimated the portions initially, we were definitely stuffed (but happy!) as the night wore on.

Seafood gourmands can take comfort in the Mare d Monti ($28), which lets on a hint of spice in the mixed seafood linguine and basil oregano in tomato sauce. A much fiery kick awaits in the il Villaggio di Mamma ($22), with its spicy tomato sauce doused over chicken bolognese penne.

The sole pizza on the menu, Villaggio di Bergamo Pizza ($26), is perfect for sharing. Juicy wagyu meatballs perched atop a bed of mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil and a delightfully thin yet solid crust? Sign me up!

Is Chef Luca’s new menu a fitting tribute to Mama Pezzera? Yes, yes, and yes! Save plenty of room in your tummies for this indulgent Italian spread, or pick a few selections from Pezzera’s Family Favourites and enjoy the best Bergamo has to offer.

Complete your meal with some of District 10’s choice desserts, including the Warm Lava Chocolate Cake and Traditional Italian Tiramisu.
