Common Chefs Cafe in Sembawang with Below $15 Affordable Brunch and Desserts

Common Chefs is a 2-in-1 cafe and bakery located in Sembawang. While it is rare to find many cafes in the North part of Singapore, Common Chefs’ bold move to open on this side of the island is much welcomed with open arms. The cafe can be so crowded that they are full-house on a weekend.

Food-wise, Common Chefs offers a wide selection ranging from soup, big breakfast, tacos to heartening items like burgers, steaks and savoury and dessert waffles. What makes Common Chefs stand out even more is the affordable pricing with almost all their dishes below $15.

Recently, Common Chefs has revamped their menu with unique food combination such as the Wazza (pizza and waffle) and Rich Man Burger. We paid a visit to the humble cafe on a weekend noon to try the new menu, and yes they are packed with diners!

The Full Breakfast Wazza $12 is your rendition of the English Breakfast but on a pizza.

The sweetness of the buttermilk waffle was even out by the savoury toppings like the bacon over melted mozzarella cheese. The tomatoes within lent an extra zing to the overall taste while the runny yolk contributed to a heart-gripping scene (as shown below).

Fancy something ‘Japanese’, get the Okonomiyaki Wazza $11. Generously layered with tuna over buttermilk waffle, it was then unceremoniously piled with bonito flakes before being drizzled with more Tonkatsu sauce and Japanese mayonnaise. And the flavours tasted exactly like Okonomiyaki!

Common Chefs’ signature Shepherd’s Pie $15 was well-liked amongst us. It was a filling pot of minced pork, onions and mushrooms baked with a thick layer of homemade mashed potato and mozzarella cheese.

I loved how the Shepherd Pie was served hot with a creamy and cheesy filling. This would really made your day.

On weekdays, the menu offers two kinds of burger: The Boss (double meat patty) and the Cheese Burger with a choice of beef, chicken or fish.

But on weekends, you are in for a treat! The Rich Man Burger $16, new on the menu, is only available on weekends. Instead of the typical meat patty, the burger features the hand pound Chorizo patty with scrambled egg, onions and smoked cheddar, all sandwiched between lightly toasted brioche buns.

As if it can’t get any more sinful, more melted cheddar cheese was poured over the burger. Looking like a beautiful mess, the burger was surprisingly not overly cheesy and the saltiness of the chorizo cut through the jelat-ness. While some might find it overwhelming, I would say the inclusion of the chorizo patty and cheese is made for one with a heavier taste preference. If not, it’s good for sharing too.

Even better, call for an order of Truffle Tater Tots $8 (small) or $13 (large) tossed in white truffle oil and paired with truffle mayo dip. The combination was heavenly.

At $12, the Tacos – Fish Goujons or Prawn – comes with Tomato Concasse, Mesclun Salad, Black Raisins, and Common Chefs’ special Mexican Mayonnaise on a Wheat Tortilla and you can also munch on some Corn Tortilla Chips served on the side.

I could taste a bit of spiciness in the ingredients which gave the dish an extra lift. Portion was just nice and I especially loved the fried fish with tender white meats within.

And we are not leaving without desserts…

Not only are there daily cakes on display, Common Chefs also offers three types of dessert waffles (charcoal, chocolate chip or the naked) with a sauce of your choice.

The in-house Mickey Raspberry Dome Cake $5.90 was a beautiful raspberry mousse cake with a molten raspberry core. Slightly sourish and sweet, this was a refreshing dessert to wrap up our meal!
