Chop Tiang Bee Cafe 长美号 Asian-fusion Spicy Noodles & Rice Bowls in Melaka

Entering Chop Tiang Bee Cafe 长美号 feels like I am stepping into a landed estate. A gate opens to a stone pavement that leads to the inner door while the view of the alfresco is equally homely and relaxing with a pond, few seats and an area that appeared reserved for a live band.

Chop Tiang Bee Cafe is located around a corner of Jonker Street in Melaka and offers a multi-cuisine menu. Selections range from their signature local delights to a mix of Chinese and Western breakfasts, Asian-fusion rice/noodle bowls, side dishes and desserts. Weekend specials entice with the Black Diamond (Chocolate) / Matcha Cheese Cake RM15.90 and Bravocado RM17.90, a unique avocado-based parfait.

Crowd-favourites here include the CTB Nasi Lemak RM10.90 that comes with butterfly pea rice and the CTB Laksa RM16.90. For something hearty, go for the rice bowls and noodles too. Some recommended ones from their menu comprise of the Ayam Pongteh Rice Bowl RM20.90, Sambal Prawn and Squid Petai Rice Bowl RM24.90 and Smoked Duck Aglio Olio RM19.90.

Essentially, there’s still the elements of traditional spices in their dishes like the sambal chilli that locals love.

I had the Sambal Salmon Aglio Olio RM35.90 which filled up the bowl with a slab of pan-fried salmon steak, soft boiled egg (that was a little overcooked) and chopped ladyfingers on a bed of Aglio olio-styled spaghetti. The highlights were the two types of sambal chilli that wrapped up the dish tantalisingly.

Though the bowl might look simple for the price, my thoughts were slowly being dispelled as I moved from the ingredients to the noodles. Thin squiggly strands of noodles were tossed in what I believed to be chilli, oil and garlic. I had expected a western-kind of Aglio olio, but this caught me off guard with its more Asian-liked taste, being less strong in the garlic fragrance, spicier and slightly more flavourful on its own. It was so good.
