Chang Korean Charcoal BBQ Restaurant at Dempsey Hill – For Beef Short Rib, Oyster Pancake & Ginseng Ice Cream

Dine among lush greenery at Chang Korean Charcoal BBQ, a long-standing Korean restaurant situated at Loewen Road, Dempsey Hill, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Here, get ready for a delightful Korean feast lavished with well marbled beef, authentic Korean appetisers, homemade ginseng ice cream and more.

We began with the Seasoned Raw Beef $43, one of my favourite dishes of the night. It is like the Korean version of the beef tartare. Everything on the plate is to be mixed together such that with each bite, you get a taste of crunchy pear and cucumber against pleasant strips of beef sleeked with yolk.

Have a go at the Pan Fried Fresh Oyster Pancake $28 that comes with plump juicy oyster, pickled radish and fried lotus roots, a twist from the typical Kimchi and Seafood Pancake we usually see.

Some other hot and cold appetisers on the menu include the Sliced Pork Trotter with Jellyfish $38, Deep Fried Korean Fresh Ginseng $35 and Stir Fried Glass Noodle $25.

The Bibimbap served in a stone pot is highly recommended and well-loved among us. Though it looks simple, the mixed vegetables and additional of spicy sauce elevates the taste and flavour of the entire dish beautifully.

Here comes the BBQ highlights – Prime Boneless Short Rib (USA, 150g) $52, Marinated Short Rib (USA, 330g) $55 and Thin Sliced Ox Tongue (Australia, 120g) $49.

I love the short ribs, especially the prime boneless short ribs which are very tender. The ox tongue, however, requires a bit of chewing. But if you like ox tongue regardless of its tougher texture, go for it.

Complete the meal with a platter of vegetables $35, comprising of asparagus, onions, mushroom, zucchini and potatoes for BBQ.

There are other meat choices for grilling too, such as the Wagyu Rib Eye (Australia, 200g) $88, Kurobuta Pork Belly (USA, 160g) $42 and Pork Jowl (USA, 160g) $31.

For desserts, don’t leave without trying the Homemade Korean Ginseng Ice Cream, which reminds me of the ginseng candy I had in Korea. The ginseng flavour is strong against the sweet vanilla ice cream. I would come back for seconds.
