BakeFresh Studio 3D Novelty Agar Agar Cake with Flying Noodles & Abalone

Fancy making traditional cream cakes and celebratory tier cakes, to novelty macarons, donuts and agar agar? Learn to bake from scratch at BakeFresh Studio! Located conveniently across 100AM mall on the second floor of Tanjong Pagar Plaza, the homely baking studio comes well-stock with various baking tools, work tables and chairs, plus a mini pantry for snacks and drinks. Each class can accommodate roughly 10-12 students with some spanning across two days or one whole day.

There is a team of five instructors (including the two co-founders) specialising in different aspects of baking. If you are lucky, you might even be able to snag a class taught by guest instructor Chef Yamashita, the owner behind the popular same-name Japanese dessert shop, Chef Yamashita.

Also, BakeFresh Studio is under the SkillFuture Scheme where you will find several SkillFuture eligible classes. Whether you are an experienced baker yourself or a novice, there’s no stopping you from joining!

With a heart full of anticipation, I joined in the 3D Novelty Agar Agar Cake (Longevity Noodles 2-Tier Advanced Class) last week. The class costs $300 (claimable under SkillFuture) plus a $30 admin/ingredient fee (non-claimable). Subsequent class dates would be on 14 April, 26 April and 4 May 2019 with limited slots available.

The class timing was neatly spaced out to make the different components of the agar agar cake. We learnt how to mix the colourings, set the cake and some techniques in making our mock ingredients look realistic. As it is an extravagant-looking flying longevity noodle bowl brimming with goodness, each ingredient warrants special attention to fit the profile.

It was good that the instructor to student ratio was 1:2.5 that day. I could easily ask one of the instructors for help during difficulties.

Nonetheless, I felt assured because the instructions were clear. As someone who has no inkling how to make agar agar, this class was reasonably easy to follow.

It was really enjoyable to be able to make so many kinds of objects such as the abalone, prawns, drumlets, vegetables and peaches.

Assembling was surprisingly not difficult.

After we had our agar agar done as the base, we had a red agar agar bowl ready to start filling in with the components. We added in the soup, flat noodles, and arrange the ingredients on top.

As for the flying noodle, you would learn how to make it still in the air. I had tried this method with maggie mee at home before. Still, it’s amazing to know a better way to make it more rigid.

Ta-dah! The end result looks so gorgeous!

It was huge and heavy, but so realistic and appealing.

Remember to add more transparent (something to stick the components together) and ensure your objects are placed upright. My agar agar cake made it safely home to shouts of awe.
