Alter Ego by A Poke Theory – Healthy Poke Bowls or Sinful Happy Fats at Esplanade

Unleash the monsters in you at Alter Ego – the evil twin sister of A Poke Theory. Following the success of mouth-watering Hawaiian poke bowls at A Poke Theory, the folks opened Alter Ego at the Esplanade, offering a glimpse into the real you. Pore through the double-sided menu that segregates the poke bowls and smoothie desserts for a moment of soul cleansing, and sinful indulgence of snacks and happy fats.

Nothing can stop you from having the best of both worlds since you might just as well embrace the best of both selves.

Eat clean with the Umami Omega $17 that came with a generous portion of spicy garlic sesame salmon cascading over sushi rice and served with lime avocado, kale chips, pickled shimeiji mushrooms and tobiko. Get an extra dose of nutrients by adding on Peruvian pomegranate $2, spice roasted cashew $2 or kimchi $1 to complete your poke bowl.

Poke bowls are available till 9PM daily so make sure you bring your faithful ego along.

As night falls, dig into the Jalapeno Cheese Poppers $5, one of the best bar grubs to go with the beers and boozes in store. Splashed with a dollop of bacon ketchup, be sure to slap a morsel onto the crispy cheese balls before you eat. To make things dramatic, the stretchy cheese would probably excite you more into chewing it bit by bit.

The Double Patty Melt $22 rewards double the bliss to whoever consumes this whole. Perched on a buttery brioche bun were two patties made from a blend of freshly ground beef chuck and wagyu fat, accompanied with layers of melted American cheese, pickle slices and bacon ketchup. Sink your teeth into this loaded juicy mess of meaty satisfaction.

Even the Mexican corn and sautéed thyme mushrooms served on the side played flavourfully on our tastebuds.

Pamper yourself more by adding $5 to change the beef chuck in your patty to Wagyu rump too.

You can’t really go wrong with Chilli Cheese Dog $17, especially one that comes with our favourite tangle of curly fries. The grilled cheddar sausage, which would do better with a thick juicy bratwurst, was piled unceremoniously with sweet and spicy house-made beef mince, sour cream and melted cheddar before being stuffed in a buttery griddled bun. Every bite equates to happy calories.

Seafood Gumbo $16 was a Creole-style soup flavoured with roasted prawn heads and vegetables, and came in a medley of shrimp, shredded chicken, Italian sausage and garlic paprika bread soldiers. It resembled clam chowder, but a carnivore version. On a saltier side, the soup had us reaching for more juices to quench the thirst in us.

Desserts call to my inner self regardless of which side of the menu they are on.

The Blackberry Binge Smoothie Bowl $7 consisted of an antioxidant boost of bananas, raspberries, blackberries and soy milk while topped with blueberries, pomegranate arils, coconut chips and cacao nibs. What a great way to detox and replenish our bodily liquid.

Either that or indulge in the French Silk Pie $8 where the chocolate mousse atop buttery crust was silky smooth and not overly rich. Spread with pillowy soft Chantilly cream, over-indulgence in this is at your own risk.

Deconstructed Latte/Mocha $9
Southern Sunrise $7
